Barrie had the fourth highest unemployment rate among Canadian cities in July. The latest numbers released by Statistics Canada showed the jobless rate in July was  7.0 per cent, up from 6.9 per cent in the previous month. Thousands in Windsor-Essex to be impacted by social assistance changes

Changes to social assistance in Ontario will impact thousands of people in Windsor-Essex. The Progressive Conservatives are pushing the pause button on the previous Liberal government’s system, and replacing it with one of their own. As part of the changes, the promised three per cent increase to Ontario Works and ODSP recipients will be slashed in half, to 1.5 per cent. The Ontario government says it is weighing the fate of the province’s safe injection and overdose prevention sites. Health Minister Christine Elliott says the government is reviewing evidence on the sites to see if they “have merit” and are worth continuing. WHITECOURT, Alta. — The province of Alberta is apologizing to the families of three people killed in a plane crash almost 65 years ago after cleaning up the wreckage without warning. A memorial site near Whitecourt, Alta., included the debris of the small plane that went down on Nov. 22, 1953. The wreckage was cleaned up by Alberta Environment and Parks last fall.
