Should You Hire for Sales Skill or Technical Acumen?

The question plaguing many hiring managers — not just in the Clinical Research and the Genomics and Genetics Diagnostics spaces, but indeed in all businesses — is: “Should we hire a candidate with technical expertise and train them in becoming a great sales person; or, should we hire a candidate with a strong sales background and train them in technical and product knowledge?

Making a hiring decision to address all the needs of your business takes forethought, patience and insight. You may find yourself asking whether you should focus more on sales or technical experience throughout the process, but the truth is, both are integral to success.

In fact, research shows that sales experience is more important long term, while technical expertise is more important short term. Let’s go into more detail.

Some say truly good sales people are harder to find than those with technical expertise, being that the ability to sell comes more naturally to those with certain innate traits t

Millions turn out in Iran for General Soleimani's funeral – BBC News

Large crowds gathered in the Iranian capital Tehran for the funeral of the military commander, killed in a US attack on Friday. Qasem Soleimani was assassinated in neighbouring Iraq, on the orders of US President Trump.

Soleimani was one of the most powerful figures in Iran, he directed operations in the Middle East and his killing has marked a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, with wider implications for the entire region.

Iran’s allies in the Middle East include Iraq, and General Soleimani had influence over a number of militias operating there. But concerns about Iran’s growing influence was also one of the main drivers of mass protests in Iraq last year.

Tonight’s BBC News at Ten was presented by Huw Edwards, with contributions from the Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen and the Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg.

Hevrin Khalaf: Death of a peacemaker – BBC News

A BBC Arabic investigation has uncovered compelling evidence suggesting the Syrian-Kurdish political leader, Hevrin Khalaf, was executed by a faction of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army.

Rebel group Ahrar al-Sharqiya, which fights for the SNA, is accused of her murder, but has told the BBC it is not responsible for the politician’s death.

But by speaking to members of Ahrar al-Sharqiya, as well as Hevrin Khalaf’s family, former colleagues and an eyewitness, plus using open source investigation tools, the BBC has discovered a different story about what happened on 12 October 2019.

The Turkish government, which backs the Syrian National Army, has not responded to BBC requests for comment.

Brexit: Boris Johnson agrees new Brexit deal with EU – BBC News

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared earlier today that he’d struck a new Brexit agreement with the European Union — ‘a great new deal’ in his words that ‘takes back control’. But crucially the deal still needs the approval of both the UK and European parliaments.

And at Westminster, there is uncertainty about the likelihood of MPs giving their approval when they meet in emergency session on Saturday. Northern Ireland’s DUP, whose support Boris Johnson needs, has already rejected it. And Labour says this deal is much worse for the UK than the one negotiated by Theresa May.

Huw Edwards presents the BBC News at Ten live from Brussels and hears from the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Europe editor Katya Adler, Ireland correspondent Emma Vardy, economics editor Faisal Islam and deputy political editor John Pienaar.
