UK Election 2019: BBC Debate in Cardiff – BBC News

Tonight, the BBC hosted an election debate in Cardiff, with representatives from the main 7 parties contesting seats on December the 12th taking part.

All the participants expressed their horror at what the police are calling a terrorist attack on London Bridge, and paid tribute to the victims and the emergency services. The debate itself saw heated exchanges over Brexit, with Conservative claims they could get “Brexit done”, being described as a ‘lie,’ and Labour’s position branded as a ‘cop out’.

Tonight’s BBC News at Ten is presented by Clive Myrie, with report and analysis from the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg.

Myanmar Rohingya: Suu Kyi to defend genocide charge at UN court – BBC News

Aung San Suu Kyi is due to appear at the UN’s International Court of Justice in The Hague to defend Myanmar against accusations of genocide.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will hear allegations that Myanmar committed atrocities against Muslim Rohingya.

Thousands of Rohingya were killed and more than 700,000 fled to neighbouring Bangladesh during an army crackdown in the Buddhist-majority country in 2017.

Myanmar has always insisted it was tackling an extremist threat.

The case has been brought by the small African nation of The Gambia.

In the initial three-day hearing at the ICJ, it will ask the court to approve temporary measures to protect the Rohingya.

UK Election 2019: Boris Johnson's Conservatives win majority – BBC News

Boris Johnson is back in Number 10 Downing Street tonight, this time as prime minister of a majority Conservative government, after a notable victory in yesterday’s election, where his party made sweeping gains in England and Wales. The prime minister said he hoped the result would bring ‘closure’ to the Brexit debate and start a process of healing.

The Conservatives have emerged with a majority of 80 seats in the Commons – the party’s biggest since 1987.

But it was a very different story for Labour. It was their worst performance since the 1930s. Jeremy Corbyn says he will not lead Labour into another election but he hasn’t yet announced his plans to step down.

The Liberal Democrats also had a bruising night – their leader Jo Swinson lost her seat to the Scottish National Party. Indeed, across Scotland, the SNP made sweeping gains winning 48 of the 59 seats available. The electoral map of the UK was redrawn overnight.

With all seats declared, this is the state of the parties. The Conservatives have 365 seats; Labour 203; the SNP 48; the Lib Dems 11; the DUP 8; Plaid Cymru 4 ; and other parties 11.

Sophie Raworth presents today’s BBC News at Six and hears from the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg, political correspondent Alex Forsyth and deputy political editor John Pienaar.

Even Jeep Is Making Bold Claims about Its Electric Future

You knew it was coming: Jeep global president Christian Meunier says the company is all in for electric and hybrid versions of the classic SUVs, starting with the China-market Jeep Commander.
As seen at the CES technology show earlier in January, Jeep’s U.S. electrification will start with hybrid versions of the Renegade, Compass, and Wrangler under the 4xe name.
By 2022, every Jeep in the lineup will have a hybrid or electric variant, he said.

In the several months since Christian Meunier took over the reins of Jeep worldwide, the new global president of the Jeep brand has made it clear he’s focusing less on interior features and luxuries, more on technology. Predictably, as goes the entire industry, so goes the off-roading icon. Christian recently told Car and Driver that his plans for the Jeep brand in the 2020s include an aggressive plan to launch plug-in-hybrid and, later, electric Jeeps throughout the coming decade.
